Neurological disorders have emerged as the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide, affecting a staggering 3.4 billion people according to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study. This systematic analysis revealed that neurologic conditions impacted 43.1% of the global population, surpassing cardiovascular diseases to become the primary contributor to the global disease burden in 2021.

The study identified 37 different conditions affecting the nervous system, leading to 443 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and 11.1 million deaths in 2021. Despite an overall increase in global DALYs from 1990, the age-standardized rates of DALYs and death per 100,000 people saw a significant decrease. Among the top conditions contributing to DALYs were stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetic neuropathy, meningitis, epilepsy, and nervous system cancer.

While previous GBD studies examined a limited number of neurological conditions, the current analysis included a broader range of neurodevelopmental and pediatric disorders. These conditions accounted for a substantial portion of the total neurologic burden worldwide, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and preventive strategies.

One crucial aspect highlighted by the study is the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors to reduce the burden of neurological conditions. By focusing on risk factors such as high systolic blood pressure, interventions can be tailored to target the key contributors to disease burden.
