An Eclectic Selection of Films at the Sands International Film Festival

The third annual Sands International Film Festival, organized by Ania Trzebiatowska, is currently underway in St Andrews, Scotland. Trzebiatowska, a full-time programmer at Sundance, has curated a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction titles for the festival. Apart from its unique selection, what sets this festival apart is the collaboration between the University of St. Andrews and AGBO, a production company founded by Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russos, known for their work on blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame, have a special connection to St Andrews through Joe’s daughter, who studied there. This connection adds a personal touch to the festival, making it a special event for all involved.

The opening night of the festival saw a gathering of prominent personalities, including Joe Russo and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. Holland, accompanied by his brother Harry, presented their joint project ‘Last Call’, a short film starring Tom alongside veteran Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan. The emotional storyline of a mother’s quest to reconnect with her son resonated with the audience, drawing comparisons to other thought-provoking films. Harry, while introducing the film, shared the personal struggles that inspired him to create ‘Last Call’, emphasizing the relevance of its themes even years after its conception.

Apart from ‘Last Call’, the festival is showcasing a variety of films, ranging from documentaries to comedies. One of the featured films is ‘In Camera’, a debut feature by Naqqash Khalid, which premiered at Karlovy Vary in 2023. Additionally, the festival will screen ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’, a Sundance-winning documentary by Anna Hints, and ‘Sometimes I Think About Dying’, starring Daisy Ridley. An interesting inclusion in the lineup is ‘Welcome to Collinwood’, a 2002 comedy produced by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, William H. Macy, and Sam Rockwell. Soderbergh himself will be present at the festival for an onstage Q&A session with the Russos, marking a special moment for the filmmakers.

The Sands International Film Festival is not just a showcase of films but also a tribute to the art of filmmaking and storytelling. It brings together established filmmakers, emerging talents, and enthusiastic students in a unique setting. The festival’s emphasis on academic engagement and curiosity reflects the Russos’ own journey as film students who eventually made it big in Hollywood. By bridging the gap between cinema and academia, the festival creates a platform for meaningful discussions and interactions that are essential for the growth of the film industry.
