President Joe Biden recently delivered a commencement speech at Morehouse College, where he addressed the ongoing war in Gaza and highlighted his investments in Black communities. This speech was part of a larger effort to reinvigorate the voter coalition that helped elect him in 2020. While Biden emphasized his achievements, such as the student loan relief program and the $16 billion investment for historically Black colleges and universities, recent polling has shown a decline in enthusiasm among Black voters, especially young ones.
Despite still maintaining majority support among Black voters, Biden’s approval ratings have taken a hit among younger demographics. The tensions over the Israel-Hamas conflict have contributed to this decline, with college campuses becoming focal points for protests. Biden acknowledged these concerns during his speech at Morehouse, expressing his commitment to addressing the situation and calling for an immediate cease-fire.
The Morehouse speech was just one aspect of Biden’s strategy to connect with the Black voter coalition. Prior to the commencement address, he engaged with Georgia voters at a campaign event and planned to meet with small-business owners in Detroit. Additionally, the administration has been actively advocating for Biden’s impact on Black communities, with Vice President Kamala Harris leading efforts to promote economic opportunity and lower costs for underserved groups.
Members of the administration, such as Treasury Undersecretary Wally Adeyemo, have been traveling to key states to showcase Biden’s economic agenda. Adeyemo recently visited Wisconsin and Nevada to discuss the administration’s achievements in reducing energy and childcare costs. During these events, he emphasized the doubling of Black small businesses under the Biden-Harris administration, aiming to reassure voters of the administration’s commitment to economic empowerment.
President Biden’s speech at Morehouse College and the subsequent campaign events are indicative of a comprehensive strategy to engage with Black voters and address their concerns. While there may have been a decline in enthusiasm among certain demographics, the administration is actively working to convey the progress made under Biden’s leadership. By continuing to listen to and advocate for the Black community, the President hopes to regain momentum and reaffirm his support among voters.
