Crowd Control in London Ahead of Champions League Final

London is currently hosting the Champions League final at Wembley, and with that comes a significant increase in police presence. More than 2,000 police officers are on duty across the city to monitor fan events and protests. These officers are tasked with ensuring the safety and security of both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid supporters.

Protests and Demonstrations

Earlier today, there was a demonstration led by far-right activist Tommy Robinson at Parliament Square. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was protesting against alleged “two-tier policing.” In response, Stand Up To Racism organized a counter-protest on Whitehall to campaign against what they deemed to be “racism and Islamophobia.”

Scotland Yard has expressed concerns about certain individuals in the crowd at Robinson’s protest who have a history of violent disorder. Some of these individuals have football banning orders and are associated with hooligan groups from London and across the UK. Additionally, the crowd included people known for taking part in anti-lockdown protests and associated disorder. There were reports of intoxication among the crowd as well, adding to the security challenges faced by law enforcement.

In response to the protests, the Met Police made two arrests in the vicinity of Parliament Square. One arrest was for drunk and disorderly conduct and assaulting an emergency worker, while the other related to an incident of racial abuse towards a woman. Additionally, a smaller protest in Waterloo resulted in several arrests after protesters attempted to block traffic. These protesters were demonstrating against Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza.

As the Champions League final approaches its 8pm kick-off, the police presence will continue into the evening to ensure the safety and security of all those attending the event. T/Commander Louise Puddefoot, who is leading the policing operation, emphasized the importance of creating a safe and enjoyable experience for fans visiting London. There will be a visible police and stewarding presence not just around Wembley but also at fan zones and other events taking place in the city.
