The cat days of spring have arrived as Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie continues to dominate the international box office. The movie has secured the number one spot on the domestic, international, and global charts this frame. With an offshore session in 60 markets bringing in $27.1M, the total worldwide earnings have now reached $152.2M. Despite being in its early overseas release, the voracious kitty has managed to surpass expectations, with markets down just 3% from the previous weekend.
One of the standout performances for The Garfield Movie comes from its release in China, where it opened to an impressive $8.2M. In just two days, the movie has already exceeded the lifetime earnings of other animated films such as Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration. The movie also saw success in new markets such as Poland, where it earned $2.4M, showcasing a 45% increase compared to The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Additionally, Australia debuted to $2M, and Indonesia brought in $700K, surpassing Puss In Boots: The Last Wish by 8%. In holdover markets, Germany experienced a significant climb of 131%, taking the top slot in its fourth weekend with a local total of $7.6M. The UK followed suit, only dropping 5% in its sophomore session, accumulating a total of $8.1M. Mexico has also proven to be a lucrative market for The Garfield Movie, reaching $19M, which is 9% ahead of The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
On the other hand, Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a more muted debut, but managed to earn $21M internationally in 77 markets. Despite a 38% drop from holdovers, the film’s overseas total stands at $64.7M, contributing to a global total of $114.4M. Notable strongholds include Germany, Belgium, and France, which experienced minimal decreases in earnings. The movie is slated for release in China on June 7, which is expected to be a significant milestone for the franchise.
20th Century/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues to showcase its playability in the international market. With just a 28% drop from the previous weekend, the film added $15.2M in 52 material markets, bringing the international cume to $197.1M. Notable holds include Germany, Brazil, and Australia, where the movie has maintained strong performances. The global total now stands at $337.1M, making it the best installment of the franchise in several countries.
Paramount’s IF also performed well this session, earning $11M in 69 markets and bringing the worldwide box office total to $138M after its third weekend. Impressively, overseas plays dipped by just 8%, demonstrating the film’s staying power in international markets. The movie is set to open in Japan on June 14 and in China on June 15, which are expected to further boost its global earnings.
