The Amazon Labor Union made headlines as the first group of company workers to organize at a U.S. warehouse. Formed in 2021, the grassroots group of current and former workers gained national attention by winning a historic union election in Staten Island, New York at the JFK8 facility. Initially choosing to remain independent from major labor unions, the ALU has faced challenges in negotiating a contract with Amazon, leading to discord among its members.
Despite its initial success, the ALU has encountered difficulties with Amazon, which attempted to nullify the results of the 2022 election. Internal conflicts have arisen between leader Chris Smalls and ALU members, resulting in a lawsuit filed by former members accusing the union of violating its constitution. The lawsuit sought to compel the ALU to hold an election for union officers, highlighting growing tensions within the organization.
In a move to strengthen its position, the ALU has taken steps to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S. The Teamsters, established in 1903, have long been involved in organizing Amazon warehouse and delivery workers. The affiliation is seen as a strategic decision to leverage the resources and support of the Teamsters in negotiations with Amazon.
The decision to align with the Teamsters has received both approval and criticism within the ALU. While the affiliation offers potential benefits in terms of negotiating power, some members, such as the ALU Democratic Reform Caucus, have raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the membership voting process. Attorney Arthur Schwartz, representing the caucus, questioned how the ALU would conduct a membership vote without a definitive list of employees or members.
Looking ahead, the ALU is set to hold an election for new union officers in July, with Chris Smalls confirming that he will not seek reelection as president. The outcome of this election will likely shape the direction of the union and its relationship with the Teamsters. As the ALU navigates internal challenges and external pressures from Amazon, the affiliation with the Teamsters represents a significant turning point in its quest for fair labor practices.
