Former NBA guard Delonte West was recently arrested and jailed in Virginia early Thursday morning on misdemeanor charges. West, 40, is currently being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond, as reported by the local authorities. The charges include violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest.
According to reports, Fairfax County police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton, Virginia. The authorities sought to serve a warrant to West, which led to a pursuit. During the chase, West was found unresponsive by the officers after losing sight of him. Narcan, a substance used to treat narcotic overdoses, was administered to West, but it did not have the desired effect initially.
After being transported to a local hospital, Narcan was administered for a second time, and this time, it worked. West was subsequently released from the hospital and taken to the Fairfax County Detention Center. It is known that West has publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder during his NBA career and has faced struggles with substance abuse in recent years. In 2021, he received treatment at a Florida drug rehabilitation therapy center and later began working at the same facility, thanks to the support of former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
Mark Cuban played a significant role in helping Delonte West to get his life back on track. In September 2020, Cuban picked West up at a gas station after images of West panhandling at an intersection in Dallas surfaced. Cuban was one of several people in the NBA who tried to support West during his challenging times. West had a successful NBA career, playing for teams like the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Mavericks. Over eight seasons, he averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game. West’s last NBA appearance was in the 2011-2012 season with the Dallas Mavericks.
Overall, Delonte West’s recent arrest and legal issues highlight the ongoing struggles he has faced with mental health and substance abuse. The support he has received from the basketball community, especially from Mark Cuban, demonstrates the importance of providing assistance and resources to those in need. It is essential to continue raising awareness about mental health issues and offering help and support to individuals like West who are going through difficult times.
