Rivian Automotive has recently announced the redesign of its popular all-electric R1 pickup and SUV models. The 2025 model-year vehicles have undergone significant changes to enhance range, performance, and computing power. The company has collaborated with Nvidia to incorporate their chips into the vehicles, resulting in a more advanced and efficient system. While the exterior of the new models may not look drastically different than the current ones, Rivian has made substantial improvements under the hood.
Rivian has focused on revamping more than half of the hardware components in the second-generation R1 models. The batteries and electrical architectures, considered the brains of the vehicle, have been reengineered to enhance overall performance. This redesign aims to push the technical boundaries further and create the most capable products to date. CEO RJ Scaringe emphasized the company’s commitment to offering quality and performance without compromise.
One of the most significant updates to the new vehicles is the computing power they now possess. Rivian claims that the new system delivers 10 times more performance than the previous version. By utilizing dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin processors, the vehicles can power the “Autonomy Compute Module,” which includes advanced driver-assistant features. The company also plans to introduce a premium version of the system with additional capabilities, including hands-free driving for limited periods.
The updated R1S and R1T models will feature a range of motor configurations, battery pack options, and extended ranges. Customers can choose between dual, tri, and quad-motor setups, as well as Standard, Max, and Large battery packs. The top ranges of these models vary from 270 miles to 420 miles, catering to different driving needs and preferences. The company has also introduced a more simplified manufacturing process for the battery packs to reduce mass and improve efficiency.
Rivian plans to start delivering the 2025 R1S and R1T models immediately, offering customers a choice of various configurations and trim levels. The pricing for the second-generation R1S SUV will see a slight increase, starting at $75,900 for base models and going up to $106,000 for top-end trimotor variants. The R1T pricing will remain the same, starting at $69,900 but reaching up to $100,000 for the most advanced trimotor options. The company has not yet disclosed specific pricing for the quad-motor vehicles.
Apart from the redesign of the components and batteries, Rivian has enhanced the vehicles’ overall performance and efficiency. The top-end quad-motor configuration now delivers up to 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-foot of torque, allowing for impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. The vehicles also feature luxurious and updated interiors, along with a redesigned software interface for a more user-friendly experience. Charging times have been improved, with the vehicles capable of adding up to 140 miles of range in approximately 20 minutes.
