Recently, a third company has issued a recall due to fears of E.coli contamination in one of their products. Customers who have purchased Vegan chicken and bacon wraps from WHSmith are being urged to return the product to the store for a full refund. The food manufacturer, THIS, has announced that the recall applies to all wraps bought up to and including Tuesday 18 June. Although no E.coli has been found in the product, the company states that this is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of consumers.
Health officials have been diligently working to trace the source of the current E.coli outbreak, as this specific strain has already affected numerous individuals. At the time of the latest figures, 211 cases had been confirmed, with at least 67 people requiring hospital treatment. The severity of this outbreak has prompted the recall of various products from different companies, as the safety and well-being of consumers have been brought into question.
Greencore Group, one of the companies affected by the recall, has emphasized its commitment to upholding the highest standards of food safety. They are collaborating closely with the Food Standards Agency and suppliers to identify the possible source of the issue. Similarly, Samworth Brothers Manton Wood has taken necessary precautions by recalling specific sandwich and wrap lines to prevent any potential health risks to consumers.
E.coli bacteria are typically harmless and can be found in the intestines of humans and animals. However, the strain responsible for the current outbreak is known as Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC), which can cause severe illness in individuals. Symptoms of E.coli contamination include severe diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever. In some cases, complications can lead to kidney failure, emphasizing the importance of food safety and hygiene practices.
Trish Mannes from the UK Health Security Agency stresses the importance of following proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of infection. Washing hands with soap and warm water, using disinfectants on surfaces, and refraining from preparing food for others are crucial steps. Additionally, individuals who suspect they may be infected are advised to follow NHS.uk guidelines and avoid work or school until 48 hours after symptoms subside.
