The Amazon Labor Union Joins International Brotherhood of Teamsters

In a groundbreaking move, members of the Amazon Labor Union have voted to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This marks a significant step for the ALU, which is the first group of company workers to organize at a U.S. warehouse. The decision, with a resounding 98% in favor of joining the Teamsters, was announced in a joint statement by the two groups on Tuesday.

The news of the affiliation could potentially bring pressure on Amazon to come to the bargaining table with the ALU. The union, based in New York, has been actively trying to negotiate with the company for better working conditions and job security for its members. With the backing of the Teamsters, the ALU is now in a stronger position to fight for the rights of Amazon workers.

The Amazon Labor Union gained national attention two years ago after a historic victory at one of Amazon’s warehouses in Staten Island, New York. The grassroots, independent labor organization was founded by current and former JFK8 employees, with a mission to advocate for the rights of workers. However, the group has faced challenges in negotiating a contract with Amazon, leading to tensions within the organization.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S., has been a strong advocate for organizing Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. The union established a dedicated Amazon division in 2021 to support and fund workers in their unionization efforts. The newly formed local chapter, ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1, now has the authority to organize Amazon warehouse workers across New York’s five boroughs.

The affiliation between the Amazon Labor Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters signifies a significant milestone in the fight for workers’ rights at Amazon facilities. With the backing of a powerful and experienced union like the Teamsters, the ALU is poised to make further advancements in securing fair working conditions and job stability for Amazon employees. This partnership sends a strong message to Amazon and other corporations that workers are united in their pursuit of better treatment and respect in the workplace.
