The Tragic School Car Crash in Wimbledon: Families Criticize Decision Not to Charge Driver

The families of two young girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, who tragically lost their lives in a school car crash in Wimbledon, have expressed their disappointment in the decision not to charge the driver. The incident occurred when a Land Rover crashed through a fence and collided with a building at The Study Prep school during an end-of-term party. While more than a dozen people were injured, the driver, Claire Freemantle, was not charged with any offense.

Prosecutors described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy” and stated that Ms. Freemantle had suffered an epileptic seizure while behind the wheel, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. Despite the tragic outcome, the CPS determined that the driver had no previous history of seizures and could not have predicted or prevented the collision. As a result, they decided not to pursue criminal charges against her.

The parents of Nuria and Selena, Sajjad Butt, Smera Chohan, Franky Lau, and Jessie Deng, criticized the decision made by the CPS. They expressed their belief that justice has not been served and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation. In a heartfelt statement, they emphasized that their children were in a safe environment and deserved better than the tragic outcome that ensued.

Claire Freemantle, the driver involved in the crash, expressed her deepest sorrow over the deaths and injuries that resulted from the incident. She claimed to have no recollection of the events that took place after losing consciousness due to the epileptic seizure. Freemantle conveyed her remorse for the devastating consequences of the crash and extended her sympathy to the families who were affected by the tragedy.

Police officers were present during the CPS’s announcement of their decision not to charge Ms. Freemantle. Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland offered to meet with the families to address any questions they may have. The CPS defended their decision by stating that there was no evidence to suggest that the driver could have foreseen or prevented the seizure, making it not in the public interest to pursue criminal prosecution.

The tragic school car crash in Wimbledon has left the families of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau devastated and seeking answers. The decision not to charge the driver has sparked criticism and disappointment among the parents, who believe that justice has not been served. While prosecutors cited the driver’s medical condition as the cause of the crash, the families remain unconvinced and continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones. The aftermath of this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences that can result from unforeseen circumstances.
