The shocking discovery of a newborn baby, named Elsa by hospital staff, who was abandoned in a shopping bag in east London earlier this year has left authorities puzzled. Initially thought to be less than an hour old, Baby Elsa was found in sub-zero temperatures by a dogwalker near the Greenway footpath and High Street South. Thanks to the quick actions of a passer-by who heard her cries and the dogwalker who kept her warm with blankets until paramedics arrived, Baby Elsa was found safe and well.
Recent DNA testing on Baby Elsa has revealed an even more heart-wrenching discovery – she has two siblings who were also abandoned in the same area in previous years. Elsa is related to a boy and a girl who were found abandoned in similar circumstances in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The girl, known as Roman, was discovered in a play area off Roman Road, Newham, in freezing temperatures, while the boy, named Harry, was found wrapped in a blanket in Balaam Street, Plaistow, in 2017. Both Harry and Roman have since been adopted, and limited details about the siblings can be reported due to legal restrictions.
Despite the heart-wrenching revelation, investigations are still ongoing to determine the identities of the parents of the abandoned siblings. Due to the active investigation into Baby Elsa’s birth, her birth cannot be registered, and decisions about her care are pending. However, a ruling by a judge at East London Family Court has allowed for the publication of the connection between the three abandoned children, following media pressure.
Judge Carol Atkinson emphasized the importance of transparency in justice and the public interest in reporting such a rare and tragic story. She highlighted that the abandonment of a baby is a very unusual event, and the fact that it has occurred three times with the same parents is of considerable interest to the public. The judge’s decision to lift reporting restrictions sheds light on the complexity of the situation and the need for awareness in the community.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information that could help identify the parents of the abandoned siblings to come forward and contact the Metropolitan Police. The hope is that with the community’s assistance, the identities of the parents can be determined, and further actions can be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of Baby Elsa and her siblings.
