Critically Analyzing Samsung’s One UI 6.1 Update for Galaxy S21 Series

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S21 series, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable phones, will be receiving the One UI 6.1 update. However, unlike newer models, these older handsets will only have access to two new Galaxy AI features. This limited functionality is a stark contrast to the 10 AI-powered features being rolled out to the more recent Galaxy Z and Galaxy S series phones.

With the One UI 6.1 update, users of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be able to utilize Circle to Search and Chat Assist. Circle to Search allows users to draw, scribble, or highlight parts of the screen for visual lookup without exiting the current app. This feature, which was previously exclusive to Samsung and Google smartphones, aims to enhance the user experience by streamlining the search process.

Chat Assist, on the other hand, offers language translation and message composition support. Users can seamlessly translate incoming and outgoing texts into different languages without the need for a separate translation app. Moreover, the feature is compatible with third-party applications, eliminating the inconvenience of switching between apps while communicating with others. Additionally, Chat Assist assists users in adjusting the tone of their messages, providing a more personalized messaging experience.

Samsung has assured users of the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 that the Galaxy AI features, specifically Circle to Search and Chat Assist, will be available at no cost until the end of 2025. This commitment to offering these features for free echoes the message displayed during the launch of the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year. However, it is important to note that these older handsets will not be receiving the full range of Galaxy AI functionality available on newer devices.

While the One UI 6.1 update brings some innovative AI features to the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3, the limited nature of these enhancements is a cause for concern. As technology advances, users expect more comprehensive updates and functionalities. Samsung may need to reconsider its approach to providing updates for older devices to maintain user satisfaction and loyalty.
