Kentucky, after being turned down by several top-tier candidates, has decided to appoint one of its own as the school’s next men’s basketball coach. The Wildcats are in the final stages of negotiating a five-year deal with Mark Pope, who is currently coaching at BYU.
Mark Pope is a 1996 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he played two seasons and won a national championship. He has had a successful coaching career so far, taking BYU to two NCAA tournaments in his five years as head coach. With a record of 110-52 at BYU, Pope has proven himself as a capable coach. Before joining BYU, he was the head coach at Utah Valley, where he went 77-56 in four seasons.
Pope will be replacing John Calipari, a Hall of Fame coach who recently left Kentucky for Arkansas. Calipari had a successful tenure at Kentucky, with a record of 410-123 that included a national title and four Final Four appearances. Pope will have big shoes to fill, but his coaching abilities and experience make him a strong candidate for the job.
One of the challenges Pope will face is the fact that he does not have an NCAA tournament win yet. His team, No. 11 BYU, lost to No. 6 Duquesne in the first round of the tournament this year. In the previous year’s tournament, BYU lost to UCLA in the first round as well. This lack of tournament success may raise concerns among Kentucky fans, who are used to seeing their team compete at a high level in the postseason.
Pope is known for his innovative offensive tactics, with BYU playing a modern and wide-open style of basketball. The team emphasizes sharing the ball and shooting 3-pointers, which has proven to be effective. In this season, BYU ranked fourth in the country in the percentage of 3-point field goals attempted, with 50.4%. Additionally, 41% of BYU’s points came from 3-pointers, showing the team’s ability to score from beyond the arc. With a strong emphasis on offensive efficiency, Pope’s coaching style should appeal to fans and potential recruits.
Before coaching at BYU, Pope worked as an assistant at Wake Forest and BYU. He then took on the head coaching role at Utah Valley in 2015, where he found success before moving on to BYU. With a well-rounded coaching background and experience at different programs, Pope brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Kentucky basketball program.
Mark Pope’s appointment as the new head coach of the Kentucky men’s basketball team marks a significant moment for the program. With his deep ties to the university as an alum and former player, Pope brings a unique perspective and passion for the Wildcats. While he may face challenges due to his lack of NCAA tournament success, his coaching abilities and offensive philosophy make him a promising choice for the job. Only time will tell if Pope can lead Kentucky to continued success on the court.
