The commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, issued a dire warning about the deteriorating battlefield situation in eastern Ukraine. The warm, dry weather has provided favorable conditions for Russian forces to attack Ukrainian positions in the Lyman and Bakhmut areas of the Donetsk region. This onslaught includes assault groups supported by armored vehicles, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
Russia’s military objectives in the near term involve capturing the remaining territory of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions in eastern Ukraine, which they claim as part of the Russian Federation. Despite only partially occupying these regions since the illegal annexation in September 2022, Russian forces have been making notable advances in recent months. The advantage in manpower and supplies of artillery shells has allowed Russia to make significant progress, with the recent capture of the village of Pervomaisk in Donetsk.
Ukraine’s Call for Assistance
Ukraine has been vocal about the acute shortages of artillery and ammunition on the eastern front, urging its international allies to provide more military aid. However, approximately $60 billion of new military assistance for Ukraine is currently blocked by Republicans in the U.S. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the country could lose the war if Congress does not approve additional aid. Defense experts have raised concerns that the conflict could shift in Russia’s favor, posing a grave threat to Ukraine’s security.
Response from Ukraine’s Military
Col. Gen. Syrskyi, who took over as head of Ukraine’s armed forces in February, emphasized that measures are being taken to stabilize the situation and enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian troops’ actions in eastern Ukraine. He mentioned reinforcing problematic defense areas with electronic warfare and air defenses, as well as replenishing drone stocks. Additionally, there have been relocations of anti-tank missiles and deployment of additional reserves to counter the escalating threat from Russian forces.
