The Sea Rangers Service, a social enterprise aimed at training young people to protect the ocean, has recently expanded to the UK. Originating from The Netherlands in 2016, the program now operates in Port Talbot. The main goal of the initiative is to restore one million hectares of ocean biodiversity by 2040, while also providing maritime career training to 20,000 young individuals from coastal areas.
The founder of the Sea Rangers Service, Wietse Van Der Werf, shared that the inspiration for the program stemmed from the need to protect the oceans and the environment, as well as addressing high unemployment rates in coastal regions. The idea of creating jobs in these areas while also focusing on marine conservation drove the establishment of the Sea Rangers Service.
Applicants for the program must be between 18 and 29 years old and undergo a rigorous boot camp led by Royal Navy veterans to assess their teamwork and motivation skills. Successful recruits, such as Selena, expressed how being part of the Sea Rangers was an incredible chance to contribute to environmental protection without the need for specific qualifications. This opportunity provides a way for young individuals like Selena to pursue their passion for marine conservation despite limited options in their local area.
The work as a Sea Ranger involves various tasks like scrubbing the deck, cleaning, preparing food, and navigation. Additionally, the program includes environmental monitoring, surveying, research, and collaboration with government agencies to ensure the work is impactful. Fellow Ranger Isaac shared his excitement about discovering his passion through the Sea Rangers Service, highlighting how the program offers valuable experiences and opportunities for personal growth.
Following the successful launch in Port Talbot, the Sea Rangers Service aims to extend its reach to other coastal areas like Portsmouth and Grimsby. With a focus on training young people for maritime careers while also contributing to ocean conservation efforts, the program continues to grow and make a difference in communities across the UK.
