James Gunn’s recent clarification on social media has shed light on a fan conspiracy theory regarding his intentions to remove Henry Cavill from the DCEU. The director, amidst his busy schedule shooting the new Superman film and the second season of Peacemaker, took the time to address fan inquiries and set the record straight.
The confusion began when Nathan Fillion shared in an interview about how he found out he was cast as Green Lantern in the new DC film, set to be released in 2025. Fillion recounted a conversation with Gunn during the premiere party of The Suicide Squad, where Gunn allegedly revealed Fillion’s role as Guy Gardner. However, Gunn clarified that Fillion had misspoken and that the actual revelation took place during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiere party.
Despite Fillion’s mix-up, some DC fans interpreted his words as evidence that Gunn had been planning to replace Cavill as Superman since The Suicide Squad. Gunn emphatically denied these claims, stating that when he was hired to write Superman, it was always with the intention of creating a new Superman story. He questioned the logic behind the conspiracy theory, emphasizing that there was never any plan to remove Cavill from the role.
Following a shakeup in DC Studios’ executive leadership, Cavill reprised his role as Superman in an end credits scene in Black Adam. However, with Gunn and Peter Safran taking over and planning to reboot the DC universe, it was announced that Superman would be recast. David Corenswet was chosen as the new Superman, with filming already in progress. The film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, among others.
