Rachel Zegler and her co-stars from A24’s Y2K recently shared a hilarious anecdote about a favorite scene from the film. The scene in question involves a group of high school students making a chaotic escape by sliding, tumbling, and bumping down a hill inside an overflowing porta potty. Zegler described how the porta potty was filled with a mixture of hot chocolate and glycerin, creating a pleasant smell that added to the confusion of shooting the scene.
Zegler recounted the challenges of shooting the scene, mentioning how the porta potty was positioned on its side on shocks, causing it to bounce up and down during filming. She also shared a funny moment where her co-star, Jaeden Martell, had to cover her ear to prevent water from getting in, only for director Evan Winter to urge him to remove his hand to ensure Zegler’s face was visible on camera. Despite the challenges, the final take that made it into the film featured Martell protecting Zegler’s ear, adding an element of spontaneity to the scene.
A Creative Retelling of Y2K
Director Kyle Mooney discussed his inspiration for the film, mentioning how he stumbled upon a YouTube video of a survival guide for Y2K, which sparked the idea for a comedic retelling of the Y2K panic. The film includes nostalgic references to the 1990s, such as allusions to Tipper Gore and dial-up Internet, capturing the essence of the era in a humorous and exaggerated way.
Mooney revealed that the concept for Y2K was born out of a text message exchange with producer Evan Winter on New Year’s Day in 2019. The idea of two kids attending a party on December 31, 1999, only for things to go awry, quickly evolved into a fully formed screenplay. The film boasts a talented ensemble cast including Julian Dennison, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Mason Gooding, and The Kid Laroi, with production credits going to Johan Hill, Matt Dines, Alison Goodwin, Chris Storer, Cooper Wehde, and Evan Winter.
Overall, the behind-the-scenes revelations from the cast and crew of A24’s Y2K provide a fascinating glimpse into the creative process and the challenges of bringing a chaotic and comedic story to life on screen. The film’s unique blend of nostalgia, humor, and unexpected moments promises viewers an unforgettable cinematic experience.
