The Unique Ownership Structure of the Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers stand out among NFL teams not only for their storied history and passionate fan base, but also for their unique ownership structure. Unlike other professional sports teams, the Packers are owned by stockholders, many of whom are devoted fans of the team. With more than 5.2 million outstanding shares owned by over 538,000 individuals, the franchise has a community-driven approach to ownership that dates back more than a century.

The Packers have conducted six stock offerings since their inception, with the most recent one taking place in 2021. These offerings have been instrumental in helping the team navigate financial challenges and fund major renovations at Lambeau Field. While shareholders do not receive dividends or have the ability to profit from their ownership, they have the opportunity to attend the team’s annual meeting and participate in voting for the board of directors.

As a nonprofit organization, the Packers allocate their annual revenue towards player salaries, stadium maintenance, marketing, and other operational expenses. Shareholders play a role in the governance of the team but do not stand to gain financially from their investment. The team’s revenue and earnings are transparently reported each year, providing insight into the financial health of the organization.

The unique ownership structure of the Packers also places limits on individual ownership. With a cap of 200,000 shares per person, ownership is spread out among a large number of shareholders, limiting the influence of any single entity. While private equity firms are allowed to own up to 10% of other NFL franchises, the Packers’ structure makes it less appealing for outside investors seeking a return on their investment.

One of the main challenges facing potential shareholders is the timing of stock offerings. While the cost of a share has increased over the years, it remains a small fraction of the overall value of the team. This, coupled with the infrequency of offerings, makes it difficult for fans to acquire ownership in the team. Despite these challenges, the unique ownership model has allowed the Packers to maintain stability and financial independence in a rapidly changing sports landscape.

The Packers’ ownership structure is just one of the ways in which the team stands out in the NFL. As the smallest market among all 32 teams, Green Bay lacks the high level of tourism and corporate sponsorship that other cities enjoy. Additionally, the team’s success on the field, particularly at the quarterback position, has drawn both admiration and envy from fans and organizations alike.

The Green Bay Packers’ unique ownership model reflects the team’s deep connection to its community and its commitment to financial sustainability. While the structure may not be appealing to all investors, it has allowed the team to thrive both on and off the field. The Packers remain a shining example of how a nonprofit organization can succeed in a competitive and profit-driven industry.
